Head Custodian (FT), Divine Mercy Parish, Quincy, MA
JOB PURPOSE: This position is responsible for the clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment throughout the Divine Mercy Parish churches (Saint Mary, Sacred Heart & Saint Ann), rectory office and parish grounds. The role supports the daily operations, services, routine maintenance, minor repairs, event setup/breakdown and ongoing monitoring of building and ground conditions. The ideal candidate is proactive, service-oriented and takes pride in maintaining facilities that reflect care, hospitality and stewardship.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Prepare the churches, and other rooms for services and church events including:
Clean and sanitize restrooms, meeting spaces, hallways, stairwells, and common areas.
Remove all trash and recycling from first floor rectory and churches
Performing the necessary room set-ups for scheduled meetings/events.
Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust and maintain floors and surfaces..
Clean windows, doors, entryways and other high-touch surfaces.
Cleaning walkways, parking lots, and steps
Keeping track of when materials/supplies need to be ordered.
Replenish restrooms and facility supplies (toilet paper, soap, paper towels)
Assisting with building security, including locking and unlocking and maintaining doors.
Perform minor repairs, including but not limited to
Basic plumbing repairs
Minor carpentry
Painting and patchwork
Light bulb replacement
Monitor HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems for issues requiring vendor support, reporting concerns to Finance & Operations Manager.
Coordinate with outside contractors and vendors when repairs exceed internal capability
As needed, manage custodial snow removal schedules and ensure parishes are ready to open as needed.
Seasonally, mow grounds, rake leaves, cleanup of grounds including Cemetery.
This position may require occasional weekend/holiday work and Emergency on-call situations as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred
2-5 years of custodial, facilities, maintenance or building operations experience preferred
General knowledge of cleaning methods, maintenance tools, and minor repair techniques
Strong attention to detail
Good communication and teamwork
Strong customer service and hospitality mindset
Basic carpentry, plumbing and painting skills
Prior experience in building maintenance, preferably in a church or similar setting.
PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE ELEMENTS:
Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling and climbing
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly
Ability to use ladders safely
Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions
Salary range - $50,000-$65,000 per year
